Solon Palmer was a pharmacist in Cincinnati, Ohio. Numerous salesmen came to his pharmacy selling their wares. Among them were perfume salesmen from France. Palmer loved the Scent of the French perfume, but he was shocked by the prices, convinced he could create perfume as well as the French houses. In 1847, he started creating perfume under the name Palmer's.
